About Us

What is Lightstock?

Lightstock is a stock resource company that licenses professional royalty-free photos, vectors and video that can be incorporated into your creative or editorial projects. Our library is geared toward the Christian community providing faith-focused, cheesy-free content you can’t find anywhere else. Of course, we have more than just faith-based content. You can find thousands of images and video from all different types of categories.

Lightstock also offers a safe-searching environment for all of its users. You’ll never come across inappropriate images. We call it temptation-free searching. Also, know that every time you download content from our site, you’re supporting a photographer, designer or filmmaker who is using his or her talents for the body of Christ.

How does Lightstock work?

To start downloading content on Lightstock, you need to first create an account. This part is free and easy. Simply sign up with your email address and a password and you’re all set. From there, you have three ways to download content from our site. You can pay for downloads as you go (a la carte) or sign up for a monthly or annual subscription. See our Plans & Pricing page.

How do Pay-As-You-Go Downloads work?

Pay-As-You-Go is as exactly what it sounds like, an easy way to buy just the content you need when you need it. Add to your cart the exact number of downloads you need and then checkout with ease.

• The cost for one photo (any size) is 1 Pay-As-You-Go download.

• The cost for one vector is 1 Pay-As-You-Go download.

• The cost for one video (any size) is 4 Pay-As-You-Go downloads.

Once your payment is successfully completed, navigate to the content you need and download away. Note: You’ll always have quick and easy access to your remaining download count in the header bar.

You can save money when you purchase Pay-As-You-Go downloads in bundles. See how much here.

How do Subscriptions work?

Subscriptions are the most cost-effective way to download content from Lightstock. You can choose to pay either monthly or annually and will be given a set number of downloads to use for that period. Subscriptions automatically renew each period, but you can cancel anytime. There are no contracts. If you choose to pay annually, you will get the entire 12 months worth of downloads right away to use throughout the year. That is the main difference between our monthly and annual options.

• The cost for one photo (any size) on any Subscription plan is 1 download.

• The cost for one vector on any Subscription plan is 1 download.

• The cost for one video (any size) on any Subscription plan is 4 downloads.

Unused subscription downloads will rollover to the next month. You can rollover up to 6 months worth of downloads when your subscription renews. For example, if you are on the 5 downloads/month plan, you would be able to rollover up to 30 unused downloads to the next month. See our Subscription Packages

What is stock photography and why should I use it?

Stock photography is used today to fulfill the needs of creative projects and is a low-cost, hassle-free alternative to hiring a professional photographer. Stock photos are licensable images made to be used and incorporated into your work. Think of them as a ‘raw-material’ useful in helping communicate your message.

What are Stock Vectors and why should I use them?

Stock vectors are used to help fulfill the demands of creative print and digital projects and is more cost-effective than hiring a professional illustrator. Stock vectors are licensable illustrations made to be incorporated into your overall work. Like our photos and clips, they are a ‘raw-material’ useful in helping express and communicate ideas. Vectors are especially unique in that they can be scaled to any size without loss in quality, making it a valuable resource in design, especially print.

What is stock video and why should I use it?

Stock video is footage that can be incorporated into a creative or editorial project. Its many uses include Church or ministry videos, multimedia presentations, sermon bumpers, social media posts, videos for web, TV advertisements and more. Stock video can be a huge help to videographers or filmmakers as it saves time and makes it possible to acquire those ‘hard-to-get’ shots.

How do the subscription packages work?

Subscriptions are by far the cheapest way to download photos, vectors or videos from Lightstock. You can choose to pay either monthly or annually and will be given a set number of downloads to use for that period. The subscription will automatically renew each period, but you can cancel anytime. If you choose to pay annually then you will get the entire 12 months worth of downloads right away to use throughout the year.

With a subscription, downloading a photo or vector will cost 1 download and a video will cost 4 downloads. The file size that you choose to download does not matter under a subscription. They are all the same price.

Unused subscription downloads will rollover to the next month. You can rollover up to 6 months worth of downloads when your subscription renews. For example, if you are on the 5 downloads/month plan, you would be able to rollover up to 30 unused downloads to the next month.

See our Subscription Packages

Am I buying the photo/vector/video or a license to use it?

You’re buying a royalty-free license which means you pay once and are permitted to use the image or video clip multiple times. Please note: Your license is for one user on one computer, but you may use the image or video clip for numerous projects.

What can I do with Lightstock photos, vectors & footage?

Use Lightstock content in any creative or editorial project such as a presentation, church or ministry video, newsletter, on your website, in a blog post, etc.

Use Lightstock images on items you distribute to your members at no charge (such as posters, pamphlets, calendars, etc.), provided that you do not produce more than 100,000 copies of the particular image.

If you are interested in using the images for purposes that might exceed 100,000 copies, please contact us for pricing and terms.

Can I use an photo/vector/video on multiple projects?

Yes. You can use an image or video clip for multiple projects but they are limited to your use only - essentially giving you a 'one seat' license. Your license is for one user on one computer. What that means is that an entire organization could not access the image or clip and use it for their projects - only the person who originally downloaded it may use it.

Can I contribute photo, vectors or footage on Lightstock?

In order to contribute content to the website you currently need to be invited. We do this in order to maintain a tight-knit community and a certain level of quality. If you think you would be a good fit for Lightstock, click here to learn more about contributing.

What’s the Apostles’ Creed and why do you ask your Contributors to affirm their belief in it?

For nearly 2000 years, the Apostles’ Creed has provided a basic, general statement of beliefs held in common by all Christians. All of the statements in the creed are grounded firmly in Scripture.  Click here to read it. Our dream from day one has been the establishment of a community of kindred-spirits who are using their talents for God’s glory – this helps ensure we’re all of one mind and one spirit.

Is your library growing?

Absolutely! We’re adding new content and contributors to Lightstock every day.

What if I’m Tax-Exempt? Do I still have to pay tax?

Absolutely not! Just send your tax-exempt form to taxexempt@lightstock.com and we’ll document it on your account so you won’t have to worry about it for future purchases. If you need something right away and we don’t have your form, we’ll refund your tax as soon as you get it to us. Don’t worry... we got your back.

I saw a reference to Poverty Porn. What does that mean?

Lightstock is committed to preventing the spread of "Poverty Porn" photography. The term "Poverty Porn" has been used to describe any form of media that exploits people in poor conditions in order to evoke sympathy or support for a given cause. The subjects are usually children or individuals characterized as suffering, malnourished and helpless.

We believe most churches, ministries and organizations have no intention of exploiting anyone. Most people have never considered the idea of poverty porn, which is why we want to educate others.

You shouldn’t expect to see any of these types of images or video on Lightstock. Our aim is providing photos and videos that portray people with dignity, joy and respect.

A special note about using Stock...

We would like to offer one suggestion concerning how “not to use” stock. When highlighting real people within your organization, it’s always best to use personal photos. The photo may not be as professional or visually interesting, but we believe it’s a better alternative than misrepresenting yourself or your organization.

Keep in mind that there are many talented photographers & filmmakers who would be happy to take portraits or shoot personalized images or video for you. You can find them online or perhaps even within your organization. Stock photos and video can be tremendously helpful and make it easier to accomplish your creative projects, but are always best used to convey ideas and concepts or be a building block for your overall creative work.

Licensing & Use

In a nutshell... how does your licensing work?

You’re buying a royalty-free license, which allows you to use the downloaded photo, vector or video clip in multiple projects. “Royalty-free” is great because it means you can reuse the content 8 weeks or 8 years from now. It’s just important to remember your license is for one user on one computer. You cannot share the file with anyone, even if they are a colleague or employed by you.

Our content should be thought of as raw materials waiting to be incorporated into your next creative project. NOTE: If you’re displaying an original stand-alone image digitally on-screen, it cannot be larger than 1200 x 800 px. Of course, any size reproduction is allowed with notable changes to the image.

What can I do with Lightstock photos, vectors or video clips?

Tons. Use Lightstock content in any creative or editorial project such as a presentation, promotional video, newsletter, on your website, in a blog post, etc.

Use Lightstock footage for your next sermon bumper, Facebook or Instagram post or New-Series-Coming-Soon video announcement.

Use Lightstock photos on items you distribute to your members at no charge (such as posters, pamphlets, calendars, etc.), provided that you do not produce more than 100,000 copies of the particular photo.

If you are interested in using the content for purposes that might exceed 100,000 copies, purchase our Extended License. Tell me more

Where can I find your Licensing agreement?

Click here to read the full version.

What does 'royalty-free' mean?

Royalty-Free means you pay once and only once for repeated use of an image. Note, you (the buyer) do not own the copyright to the image; rather you’ve purchased the rights to use the image multiple times without ever having to pay for it again.

What is a derivative work?

In United States copyright law, a derivative work is an expressive creation that includes major copyright-protected elements of an original, previously created first work known as the underlying work. For more information see Title 17 of the United States Code which outlines United States Copyright Law.

How do I know if I have created a derivative work?

Your finished work must exhibit originality. It cannot be a rote, uncreative variation on the earlier, underlying work. The latter work must contain sufficient new expression, over and above that embodied in the earlier work for the latter work to satisfy copyright originality. For more information see Title 17 of the United States Code which outlines United States Copyright Law.

Can I use an image or clip I download from Lightstock in a client’s project?

Of course. Any photo, vector or video clip you download from Lightstock can be incorporated into any of your client projects. But it’s important for you to remember (and to tell your clients) that they do not own the license and therefore do not have the rights to re-use/sell the individual image or clip.

What does ‘Editorial’ mean?

Images or clips marked as “Editorial” are for non-commercial, non-promotional, use only. They cannot be used to sell anything. Editorial images portray specific people, places, things and events that provide context for magazine articles, blog posts, websites and other non-commercial purposes. Please review our licensing agreement carefully before using Editorial images.

If you have a question about Editorial photos, vectors or video clips and how they can and cannot be used please contact us at info@lightstock.com

Do your photos and videos have model releases?

Yes. When a photo or video clip reveals a recognizable face, that person has signed a model release which resides on file with the Contributing Photographer or Filmmaker. Of course, some Editorial images/clips will not have a model release. In those cases, the image/clip will be highlighted as ‘Editorial’ in red.

Why would I need a multi-seat license?

Our standard license is a 'Single-Seat' License. That means that you are the only one allowed to work with the image or clip. This is fine for most people, but it doesn't work good for groups or teams who need to utilize an image or clip in multiple design mediums and might need to store the image/clip on a shared hard drive. So, if you need to share an image or clip with everyone on staff, be sure to use our Multi-Seat License.

The cost is $80 and can be purchased at the moment of download.

Why would I need to purchase an extended license?

Good question. You would need to purchase our Extended License if you need to exceed the maximum number of copies for distribution, which is 100,000. The cost is $80 and permits you to produce an unlimited number of copies of your final work. Be sure to read our licensing on acceptable uses or email us for questions: info@lightstock.com. We can steer you in the right direction.

Downloading

Does the photo, vector or video clip I download have a watermark on it?

Never. The watermark disappears once the file has been downloaded.

What sizes do your photos come in?

Our sizes do vary a bit, but we’ve tried to make them as standardized as possible. Here’s a breakdown:

Size Dimensions
X-Small 500px on longest side
(web only)
Small 1200px on longest side
(4in x ~3in)
Medium 2800px on longest side
(~9in x ~6in)
Max 3600 to 5600px on longest side (~19in x ~12in)

What file format am I getting when I download a vector?

It's an EPS file, which is great because it can scale to any size you need. Plus, we provide a complimentary JPEG (1200 x 800) for no additional cost. So you're really getting 2 files (EPS + JPEG).

Does a vector come with a complimentary hi-res JPEG too?

Yep. You can download an additional JPEG (1200 x 800) at no additional charge.

Why is their only one downloading option for vectors?

The reason there is only one downloading option for vectors is because a vector file (unlike a photo) can be scaled to any size without losing quality. Therefore only one option is needed.

What sizes do you offer for video?

We offer 4 standard sizes for your convenience. No matter what size you choose, the cost will be 4 downloads. Unsure what size you need? Email us at info@lightstock.com

HD 1080P - 1920 x 1080

HD 720P - 1280 x 720

I’m not sure which photo to download. Can you help me out?

Can I sell the photos, vectors or clips that I download?

No. You may not sell any Lightstock photo, vector or video clip that you download from our website. You are free to use the images or clips in your creative projects, but you cannot offer them for resale or distribution.

Can I sell a template that includes a Lightstock photo, vector or video clip?

You cannot sell templates that include Lightstock photos, vectors or video clips, unless your use of the image has been modified to such an extent that your finished work would be characterized under US Copyright law as a derivative work. For more information on a ‘derivative work’ click here

When will my account renew?

Your renewal date - also known as your billing date - depends on whether you are enrolled in the monthly subscription or annual subscription. All subscriptions will automatically renew using the card on file in your account settings:

• If you are on a monthly subscription plan, you will receive your downloads and be charged each month on your renewal date. The day of the month you signed up for the subscription is your renewal date.

• If you are on an annual subscription plan, you will receive your downloads and be charged exactly one year from enrolling in the annual subscription.

Can I upgrade/downgrade my subscription?

Sure, you can upgrade or downgrade at any time. When you upgrade, your new subscription will begin immediately and the new billing renewal date will change to that day. If you downgrade, your billing renewal date will remain the same, and your new plan will begin at the next renewal date.

Can I pause my Subscription?

No, unfortunately you cannot pause your Subscription. Remember, unused downloads rollover, so if you happen to not use them in a given month, you'll still have access to all of those in the next month.

Can I cancel my Subscription at any time?

Yes, you can cancel your Subscription at any time. Note: Your Subscription will still be active until the end of your current billing cycle. If you have any remaining downloads, please use them or you will use them when your subscription officially expires. Keep in mind, you will not be able to re-download any previous content downloaded through your subscription.

Even though your Subscription is cancelled, you can still use your account to purchase Pay-As-You-Go Downloads and download our free content.
